Novo: Prologue

“It is my firm belief that human nature, and the nature of
the universe, are so thoroughly intertwined that we cannot possibly understand
one without understanding the other.
Despite all progress made thus far, if any; in this current state, the
secrets of each remain just beyond my grasp.”
--Aldin
Lysandre
Evidence
suggests that, contrary to what the name implies, the “novohuman” has lived
among us for hundreds—if not thousands—of years. People of strange and unusual powers have
been a part of our human mythologies for as long as mythologies have
existed. And yet, minimal scientific
progress has been made in regards to studying these fascinating individuals.
What is
known thus far is this: The main feature
of the novohuman is the capacity to adapt. Far beyond that of the ordinary human
being—the bodies of young novos are veritable putty, designed to mold to suit
whatever situation impacts their life to the greatest extent. They are built to survive in a way that no
other creature on Earth can: Any way
that you can imagine.
The
novohuman is generally easy to pick out from a crowd—their powers of adaptation
often lead to a wide variety of visible physical mutations. Additionally, prior to mutating, a young novo
who has had the good fortune of avoiding life-threatening situations will often
develop less specialized traits, such as unusual skin colors, hair colors, and
eye colors.
Society at
large has responded to the slowly growing presence of the novohuman in a
variety of ways, but such captivating developments in the human evolutionary
process could only go ignored for so long.
It is my firm belief that within the next twenty years, the novohuman
will be regarded like any other unique and beautiful feature of the world: as something truly wonderful.
